Community Partnerships

Community Schools - Beginning in the fall of 2014, 45 schools became NYC Community Schools as part of an attendance-improvement and drop-out-prevention grant in partnership with United Way NYC. There are now 317 Community Schools across every district in NYC, funded through city, state, and federal dollars. Community Schools support:
  • The whole child
  • The child’s family
  • Learning both inside and outside of the classroom

After-School All-Stars - After-School All-Stars provides free, comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and life.

Founded in 1992, After-School All-Stars helps students and supports working families through free, comprehensive after-school programs in cities across the nation.

21st Century Community Learning Center (After-School All-Stars)

Through this grant, the following two programs are available to students at P.S. 272:
  • After School Program provides tutoring and other academic enrichment activities along with a broad array of youth development opportunities that complement their regular academic programs. These activities include English Language Arts, Visual/Performing Arts and Math.

  • Saturday Academy – through Partnership with P.S. 272 After-School All-Stars provides a 12 Week Academic Enrichment program that provides additional and supplemental support in ELA & Math to assist students in the preparation of NY State Tests. These small group sessions are lead by certified teachers ensuring alignment with NYS Common Core Learning Standards

Community Schools

Through this distinction, by the DOE, P.S. 272 is able to provide the following to the students and their families:

Mentoring Program

  • Prototype provides a Mentoring and Life-Skills Program for “at-risk” children who need supervision and encouragement inside and outside of the classroom. The program is designed to offer a safe and secure place that children can attend to attain mental, emotional and physical wellness.

Monthly Family Engagement

  • Family Paint Night – students and their family members explore their artistic skills in a fun-filled painting class led by a painting instructor that guide all who participate in their creation of their own masterpiece.
  • Family Fun Night – high engaging events for students and their family members, to participate in a specially themed activities such as Fall Festival, Winter Wonderland, Family Fitness, Annual Spring Carnival.

Family Engagement Workshops

Annual (FREE) Parent Retreat- a weekend for parents and other supportive adults in a child’s life, gain tools and learn powerful processes to:
  • Building relationships with all children, colleagues and family.
  • Creating a safe environment for learning and personal development.
  • Developing self-managing households, and for the educators and other child working professionals that attend, self-managing classrooms.
